World Transportation System

Transportation is the movement of people or goods from one place to another. It is an act or process of conveyance from one location to another. People, animals, goods, etc. can be transported.

Types of transportation

There are various means of transportation and they include:

• By Air e.g. Airplane, Helicopter.
• By Water, e.g. Ship, Boat, and Canoe.
• By Road, e.g. Bus, Car, Bicycle.
• By Rail, e.g. Train
• By Pipeline, e.g. (movement of gas).

Advantages of each transportation system

1. Air transportation:

• It is the fastest mode of transportation.
• It is convenient.
• Air transportation is useful for long distances and saves time.
• It is efficient and quick.
• It is easy for costly and light goods can be sent through air san transportation.

2. Water transportation :

• It is the cheapest and oldest mode of transportation.
• The cost of operating water transport is less.
• It can carry heavy and bulky goods over long distances.
• It is helpful for foreign trade.

3. Road transportation:

• It requires less capital investment compared to other modes of transport.
• The cost of operating and maintenance is cheaper than that of railways.
• It provides door-to-door services, thereby facilitating quick trade.
• Road transport carries goods and people from rural areas unlike other modes of transport that can only be found in cities.
• It is cheaper for a short distance.
• Road transport acts as a feeder to other modes of transport (i.e. you can only travel by road before you get to other modes of transport).

4. Rail transportation:

• It is the most dependable mode of transport because it is least affected by the weather.
• It is better organized than other modes of transport because it has fixed routes.
• Rail transportation is fast over long distances.
• It is suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods.
• It is a cheaper mode of transport.
• Rail transportation is the safest mode of transport, chances of an accident, a breakdown is minimal.
