Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking Awareness Month: Modern Slavery Hidden in Plain ...

It is the practice of illegally transporting people from one country or area to another usually for forced labour, prostitution, fraud, forced marriage, etc. It is a criminal activity in which people are recruited, harboured, transported, bought or kidnapped to serve an exploitative purpose. Human trafficking is the crime of buying and selling people to make money from the work they are forced to do. It is like modern-day slavery and involves the use of forced labour. Victims are mostly women and children.

Factors responsible for women and children trafficking

  1. Poverty: Lack of money and economic opportunities may lead women to voluntarily move to another country and may end up engaging in prostitution and other illegal activities.
  2. Domestic violence and abuse: Women being abused in their homes by their husband may decide to run for their lives and safety and start afresh in another community they know nothing about. They are, however, at the risk of becoming victims of trafficking when they seek work elsewhere.
  3. Illiteracy: Lack of adequate knowledge about the effects of human trafficking make some women fall into the wrong hands, due to bad economic situations. They are advised to bring little money to travel abroad and get a better life but end up being trafficked and abused.
  4. Maltreatment: This is done to children especially from poor families. These children with these poor living conditions run away from home and they are eventually deceived and end up in the hands of traffickers.
  5. Globalization: Due to the rise of internet technology and opened borders among nations of the world, sex trafficking has increased and traffickers use internet sites to bring in females to be exploited. Weak law enforcement. Influence from peer group

Consequences of human trafficking

  1. Victims suffer emotional and psychological trauma and may end up not being useful for themselves and their family at large.
  2. Victims are faced with re-victimization even after being rehabilitated and settled in other countries or home country.
  3. There is a high tendency for increased crime rate especially in the country where these people are being trafficked.
  4. A high rate of illiteracy especially among children who are supposed to be in school but are being forced into child labour and street hawking.

Ways of preventing human trafficking

  1. Public awareness should be done to discourage people from being illegally migrated to other countries and the dangers involved in it.
  2. Human traffickers should be apprehended and adequately punished. This will serve as a lesson to others who want to get involved in it.
  3. Victims of human trafficking should be encouraged and given adequate attention to prevent mental and emotional disorder.
  4. Victims of human trafficking should be engaged in activities that will keep them busy and put food on their table.
  5. The government should invest in education and its infrastructure. Topics to enlighten students should be involved in the school curriculum.
  6. The government should provide adequate security to monitor the number of IDP’s coming into the country.
  7. Suspected cases of human trafficking should be reported, especially, through social media, which is the most effective platform to fight against human trafficking and other corrupt practices.
  8. There should be constant monitoring of people who moves in and out of a nation.
