Family life education is the educational effort to strengthen individual and family life through a family perspective. The purpose of family life education is to enrich and improve the quality of individual and family life such as parenting, pre-marriage education, family finances, child-rearing, etc. as well as enable individuals and families to function properly. It is also defined as the formal and informal way of developing boys and girls knowledge, attitude and skills that will help improve on their quality of life and prepare them for responsible parenthood. Topics such as menstruation, fertilization, ovulation, reproduction, choosing partners, etc. are being discussed.

Meaning of population and resources available

Population simply means the total number of people living within a political or geographical boundary. It can also mean all the inhabitants of a particular place. The population of a country is all the people who live in a country. Resources available are the supply, support, aid, assistance that can be used when needed. It can also mean the wealth, the workforce is readily available for further production of wealth. Resources, however, include materials, energy, services, manpower, knowledge and other assets that are transformed to produce something beneficial to the society.

  • Custom:

Custom simply means the traditional and common way of behaving or doing things. It can also mean a widely accepted old way of doing something specific to a particular society, place or time, it is something that is usually done over a long period, e.g. 25th day of December, Christians celebrate Christmas.

  • Value:

This means the importance, worth or usefulness of something or how useful something is. It also means something that is highly esteemed especially as one’s morals or belief. Belief is an acceptance that something exists or is true especially without proof. It is the trust, faith, confidence in someone or something.

Traditional gender issues

These are the problems that arise as a result of what should constitute the roles of male and female in society. These issues mostly affect women, as the traditional roles do not give a lot of value to women.

Some of these issues are:

  • Women roles end in the kitchen and taking care of the children.
  • Limitation to the type of occupation a woman can take up as a profession.
  • Giving women hands in marriage without their consent.
  • In some societies, women especially married ones, are not allowed to move around freely or even drive cars.

Census problem in Nigeria

Population census is the process of collecting, compiling, evaluating, analyzing and publishing the data of the number of persons living in a country at a particular time. Nigeria, however, is faced with the challenge of conducting a successful census in Nigeria due to the following reasons.

  • The problem of ethnicity and religion bringing about disunity among the Nigerian citizens.
  • A high rate of illiteracy especially in the northern parts of the country has a negative impact on the conduct of census (many people tend to run away when officials come to take count).
  • The high rate of insecurity and insurgency are affecting the conduct of the census.
  • Inadequate infrastructural facilities in some areas to conduct these exercises.
  • Corrupt practices of leaders to loot the funds made available for the census.
