Meaning of social studies

The study of human society, social relationships and functioning of the society are what social studies encompasses. It is an educational discipline that is made up of courses in History, Economics, Civics, Sociology, Geography and Anthropology.

Social studies can be defined as the study of History, people and the Society at large. The purpose of Studying social studies is to help the Young ones develop the ability to make good decisions for themselves and society at large. It also helps to learn about the cultures of other people as well as values. Social studies is the study of man and his environment.

Contents of social studies

The contents of social studies are the values and ideas, which make up the study of society. These contents however are:

  • Facts:

These are truth-based observations, things that are actual and real. They are information and ideas gotten for further discussion and analysis. Facts help to identify the problem and look for appropriate solutions to avoid future mistakes or reoccurrence.

  • Concepts:

These are general ideas gotten and retained in the mind from experience, reasoning and imagination of a particular set of instances or occurrence.

  • Generalisation:

This is a kind of conclusion reached as a result of specific instances or events, mostly true in some cases but not in all situations, e.g. Yoruba men who are Muslims are polygamous, this may be true to some extent but not in all cases.

  • Skills:

This is the ability to do something well in a significant way that matters. Skills can be acquired or learned

  • Values:

Values refer to the degree of importance given to something, e.g. one’s morality or belief system.

  • Attitudes:

This is the way one thinks or feels about someone. It is the behavioural pattern shown towards things, places and people. Attitude goes a long way in determining if to like a person or not or how one can cope with the work environment.

Components of social studies

The components of social studies are:

  1. Cognitive component.
  2. Affective component.
  3. Psychomotor component.

I will break it down for better understanding and clarity.

  • Cognitive component:

This involves the study of the mind (mental process of perception) and behaviour. It is the act of knowing something. One’s sense of judgment and ability to learn from situations, e.g. staying away from rotten/ contaminated foods because one already knows it possesses a challenge to our health.

  • Affective component:

This refers to the emotional reaction one has towards another. Affection and Emotions make it easier for co-existence and peaceful living, it also encourages love and cooperation.

  • Psychomotor component:

This is the feedback gotten as a result of an action taken. Feedback helps to improve on future behavioural pattern.

In our next class, we will be talking about Human Emotion(Love).  We hope you enjoyed the class.
