Welcome to class!
In today’s class, we will be talking about goal setting. Enjoy the class!
Goal Setting
The goal is what someone is attempting to achieve, it is a future desired result that individuals want to achieve. Goals are achievements or desired results a person aims to get with efforts. Goal setting is pulling into plan what one wants to achieve in future.
Types of goals
- Long-term goals.
- Short-term goals.
- Long term goals: These are goals (plans) that are made for future and they are usually for longer years, e.g. retirement plan, career path, buying a house, etc.
- Short term goals: These are plans that are made but to be actualized within a short period, usually less than a year. Most times, these goals are set to help actualize bigger goals, e.g. getting a good grade in all subjects.
Importance of goal setting
- Goal setting helps us believe in ourselves and the future.
- It helps us to be focused and hardworking
- Goal setting gives individuals a plan to work towards and what is needed to accomplish the goals.
- Goal setting helps us to evaluate ourselves as a person. It ascertains whether we are going the right path or need redirection.
- Goal setting helps us to identify what we truly want in life and how to go about in getting it.
- Goal setting helps us to get the best result out of what we plan to achieve. It does not make us settle for less.
Tips for goal setting and achieving goals
- Setting detailed and specific goals, do not try to set unrealistic or ambiguous goals, e.g. A 10-year-old setting to buy a car in the next 2 months is unrealistic.
- Set goals that are achievable within the period.
- Set a time limit for every goal that is being set. This will help to be more focused and hardworking
- Have a mentor or a role model, who can shape your goals just the way they did theirs. This will help to learn the steps they have taken.
- Make sure that the goals set are what you want to do and check if it makes you happy or feels right.
- Do not allow doubts to creep in, failure does not mean your goals cannot be achieved. Attempt to try harder when it seems things are not working as planned.
Obstacles of goal setting
- Procrastination or pushing forward what is to be done now to a later time.
- Living with fear, doubt and negative thoughts about one’s goal can be a big obstacle.
- Lack of direction or path to be followed can be a great distraction.
- Trying to do so many things or ambiguous things within a limited time can be an obstacle too.
- Not doing a check on one’s progress about the goal being set is also another big obstacle.
In our next class, we will be talking about Making Decision. We hope you enjoyed the class.
