We are thrilled to have you in our class!!

In today’s Information Technology class, we will be talking about  Local Area Network and Metropolitan Area Network

Local Area Network and Metropolitan Area Network

Local Area Network

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in one physical location, such as a building, office, or home. A LAN can be small or large, ranging from a home network with one user to an enterprise network with thousands of users and devices in an office or school.

Regardless of size, a LAN’s single defining characteristic is that it connects devices that are in a single, limited area. In contrast,  Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) covers large geographic areas. Some MANs connect many LANs together.

We can define Metropolitan Area Network as a type of computer network that spans over a metropolitan area, typically a city like Lagos for example.

Metropolitan Area Network

In summary , the main purpose of a MAN is to connect different LANs in a city to share resources and exchange data, as well as to provide internet access to users.
