Differences between transportation systems

  • Road transportation:
  1. Movement of people and goods is done on the road.
  2. Means of transportation by road include vehicles, buses, cars, bicycles etc.
  3. It provides door-to-door services.
  4. There is a limit to the kind of heavy/ bulky goods it can carry.
  5. It requires less capital investment to start, operate and maintain.
  • Rail transportation:
  1. Movement of people and goods is done on the railways.
  2. It does not provide door-to-door services, road transportation is a feeder to rail transportation.
  3. Means of transportation by rail train.
  4. It can carry many heavy and bulky goods over a long distance.
  5. It requires a lot of capital investment to start, operate and maintain.
  • Water transportation:
  1. It is not a fast means of transportation
  2. Movement of people and goods is done on the water.
  3. Means of transportation by water include boat, ship, canoes etc.
  4. It cannot carry perishable goods because it takes a long time to get to its destination.
  5. It is cheap to travel and carry goods on water transportation.
  • Air transportation:
  1. It is the fastest means of transportation, especially for long-distance.
  2. Movement of people and goods is done on the air.
  3. Means of transportation by air include aeroplane, helicopter, jet, etc.
  4. It is convenient to carry perishable goods.
  5. It is very expensive to travel in the air.

Impact of science and technology on the world transportation system

  1. Science and technology have made it easy through mobile app development to plan the journey. Time of arrival and departure can be known through various phone apps in the comfort of one’s house.
  2. Science and technology have greatly improved the infrastructure and the tools used in building various means of transportation.
  3. Advances in science and technology have given people first-hand knowledge about weather and climate information whenever a journey is to be embarked upon.
  4. The modern transportation that is now available as a result of science and technology has made it easy and fast for people to travel. E.g. power bikes.
