Who Is Ben Carson?
Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. His family was very poor, and his parents got divorced when he was very young. His mother, Sonya Carson, only had a little education, but she was very wise. She believed in education and encouraged Ben and his brother to read books and study hard.
At first, Ben didn’t like reading, and he was the worst student in his class. Other students even laughed at him. But his mother didn’t give up on him. She made a rule: Ben and his brother had to read two books every week and write reports on them. This changed Ben’s life forever!
His Journey to Becoming a Doctor
Because of his mother’s encouragement, Ben fell in love with learning. He started getting good grades and later became the best student in his class. He worked hard and got into Yale University, where he studied Psychology. After that, he went to Johns Hopkins University to study medicine and become a brain surgeon (neurosurgeon).
His Amazing Achievements in Medicine
Ben Carson became the youngest head of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital at just 33 years old! Some of his greatest medical achievements include:
- The First Successful Separation of Conjoined Twins – In 1987, he led a team of doctors to separate Patrick and Benjamin Binder, twin babies who were joined at the head. It was the first time such a surgery was successful.
- Saving Children with Brain Disorders – He developed new techniques to perform surgeries on the brain and helped many children survive life-threatening conditions.
- Helping Patients with Seizures – He invented a surgery called hemispherectomy, where one half of the brain is removed to stop seizures.
His Life Beyond Medicine
After years of saving lives, Ben Carson retired from surgery and entered politics. He ran for President of the United States in 2016, but he didn’t win. Later, he became the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), helping poor people find better homes.
