Nigeria’s Independence
Have you ever been to a birthday party where everyone was happy, singing, and celebrating? Birthdays are special because they mark the day a person was born. But did you know that countries also have special days to celebrate when they became free?
Nigeria’s special day is called Independence Day, and it is celebrated every year on October 1st. This is the day Nigeria became free from British rule and became its own country. Just like a child growing up and learning to do things on their own, Nigeria became independent and could make its own decisions.
A long time ago, before Nigeria became independent, it was controlled by the British. The British ruled over Nigeria, made important decisions, and created laws for the people. But the Nigerian people wanted to be free to make their own decisions and govern themselves. Many great leaders worked very hard to make this dream come true.
One of the most important leaders who fought for Nigeria’s independence was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. He and other great men, like Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Chief Anthony Enahoro, spoke up and worked together to make sure Nigeria could become free. The people wanted a country where Nigerians could choose their own leaders and decide their own future.
Finally, on October 1, 1960, their hard work paid off! Nigeria became independent, and the British flag was taken down while the green and white Nigerian flag was raised high in the sky. People danced, sang, and celebrated because Nigeria was now free!
Imagine you had an older cousin who always decided what games you could play, what food you could eat, and even when you could go outside. One day, your parents decide that you are old enough to make your own choices. Now, you can pick your games, food, and playtime. That feeling of freedom is just like what Nigeria felt when it became independent!
Every year on October 1st, Nigerians celebrate Independence Day with parades, music, and speeches. Schools, homes, and streets are decorated with green and white, and people remember the great leaders who fought for our freedom.
