Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti

Imagine if only boys were allowed to go to school, while girls were told to stay at home and do housework. That would not be fair, right? A long time ago, this happened in many places, but Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti fought to change that. She wanted women and girls to have the same rights as men and boys. She was a fearless leader who worked hard to make Nigeria a better place.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was born on October 25, 1900, in Abeokuta, Nigeria. She was one of the first Nigerian women to go to school at a time when many girls were not allowed to get an education. She later travelled to England to study and became very knowledgeable.

When she returned to Nigeria, she noticed that women were not treated fairly. They were not allowed to vote, and they had to pay heavy taxes even though they did not earn much money. She knew this was wrong, so she started speaking up for women’s rights.

She formed the Abeokuta Women’s Union, a group that helped women fight against unfair treatment. She led protests and spoke directly to government leaders, demanding that women be treated equally. Because of her efforts, unfair taxes on women were removed, and more Nigerian women got the opportunity to be educated and have a voice in society.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was also the first Nigerian woman to drive a car! She believed women could do anything men could do, and she showed it through her actions.

She was the mother of Fela Kuti, the famous Nigerian musician who used his songs to fight against bad government. Just like her son, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti used her voice to fight for justice.

Clear and Relatable Examples:
Imagine if only boys were allowed to answer questions in class while girls had to keep quiet. That would be unfair, right? Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti fought so that everyone—boys and girls—could have the same rights and opportunities.

Another example is if your school made only girls sweep the classrooms while boys just sat down. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti would not accept that! She wanted fairness for all.

Conclusion:
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a fearless Nigerian woman who fought for equal rights. She believed women should go to school, have jobs, and be treated the same as men. She led protests, formed the Abeokuta Women’s Union, and helped Nigerian women gain more rights. She was also the first Nigerian woman to drive a car!
