Introduction to History

Introduction:
Have you ever looked at an old picture of yourself and laughed because you looked so different? Maybe Mummy or Daddy showed you a photo of when you were a baby, and you couldn’t believe that tiny baby was really you! That is because pictures help us remember the past. But what if we wanted to know about things that happened a long, long time ago—before we were even born? That is where history comes in!

History is the story of the past. It helps us remember important events, great people, and how things have changed over time. Just like a storybook tells you about adventures, history tells us the story of real-life events that happened before today.

Think about your family. You know your mummy and daddy, and you may even know your grandparents. But do you know who your great-grandparents were? They were part of your family’s history! Your family history includes things like where your grandparents were born, what kind of work they did, and how your mummy and daddy met.

Now, just like your family has a history, our country, Nigeria, and even the whole world have history too. A long time ago, there were no cars, aeroplanes, or even mobile phones! People lived in villages, wore different clothes, and travelled by walking or riding animals. History helps us learn about how people lived in the past and how things have changed to what we see today.

We can learn history in different ways. We can listen to stories from our elders, read books, look at pictures, or visit places like museums, where old things from the past are kept. Some people also write history in books so that we can always remember what happened.

Let’s imagine that your grandfather tells you a story about how he went to school without shoes and had to carry his books on his head. That is history! It helps you see how life was different for him when he was a child compared to now when you have a school bag and can wear shoes.

Another example is Nigeria’s Independence Day. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria became free from British rule. We celebrate this day every year to remember an important moment in our country’s history.

Conclusion:
History is the story of the past. It helps us understand where we come from and how things have changed over time. We learn history by listening to elders, reading books, looking at pictures, and visiting museums. History helps us remember great events and people so we don’t forget them.

Evaluation:

  1. What is history?
  2. Can you name two ways we can learn about history?
  3. Ask an elder in your family to tell you a story about their past. What did you learn?

You are such a smart and curious learner! Always remember that history is important because it helps us know who we are and where we come from. Keep asking questions and keep learning, because you are a future leader of Nigeria! See you in our next exciting lesson. Keep shining with Afrilearn!
