How Did He Become Nigeria’s Head of State?


In 1966, there was a lot of political crisis in Nigeria. After a military coup (a forceful change of government), Yakubu Gowon was chosen as Head of State on August 1, 1966. He was only 31 years old, making him the youngest leader in Nigeria’s history.

The Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970)

One of the biggest challenges Gowon faced was the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafra War. In 1967, some people in the Eastern Region wanted to separate from Nigeria and form a new country called Biafra. This led to a war that lasted for three years.

During the war, Gowon led the Nigerian government in fighting to keep the country united. The war ended in 1970, and he declared that there was “No Victor, No Vanquished”, meaning that Nigeria should move forward as one united country without hatred.

Gowon’s Contributions to Nigeria

  • Created 12 states in 1967 to replace the old regional system, making the country more organised.
  • Introduced the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1973 to promote unity among young Nigerians.
  • Rebuilt Nigeria after the war by focusing on education, roads, and hospitals.
  • Encouraged peace and unity after the civil war.

End of Gowon’s Leadership


In 1975, while Gowon was attending a meeting abroad, his government was overthrown by another military leader, General Murtala Muhammed. After this, Gowon lived in exile in the UK for many years but later returned to Nigeria.
