Germination of Seeds: If you’ve ever planted beans in a garden or a container, you’ll notice that the seeds don’t sprout until you water them. That’s because water is needed to soften the seed coat and activate the enzymes that trigger growth. Without water, seeds remain dormant.
Photosynthesis (Food Production): Just like you need food to have energy, plants need to make their own food to survive. Water is a key ingredient in photosynthesis, where plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose (food) and oxygen. Without water, photosynthesis stops, and the plant eventually dies.
Transport of Nutrients and Minerals: Imagine a borehole pumping water through pipes to different parts of a house. That’s how water moves inside a plant! It carries essential nutrients and minerals from the roots to other parts of the plant, ensuring proper growth and development.
Cooling and Temperature Regulation: Have you ever noticed how sweat cools your body on a hot day? Plants also lose water through tiny openings in their leaves (stomata) in a process called transpiration. This helps them stay cool, especially during hot weather.
Maintaining Plant Structure: Water helps plants stay firm and upright. When a plant doesn’t get enough water, it wilts and becomes weak. But once it absorbs water, it regains its strength. This is because water creates pressure inside the plant cells, keeping them firm.
Enzyme Activation and Metabolic Reactions: Just like cooking requires water for food to soften, many chemical reactions inside plants depend on water. It helps enzymes function properly, allowing plants to grow, develop, and respond to their environment.
Reproduction and Seed Dispersal: In some plants, water plays a direct role in reproduction. For example, in ferns and mosses, water is needed for sperm to swim towards the egg for fertilisation. Also, some seeds (like coconut) are dispersed by water, allowing them to grow in new locations.
Survival During Drought and Stress: Some plants, like maize and cassava, store water to survive dry conditions. Others, like the baobab tree, have adapted to hold large amounts of water in their trunks to survive for months without rain. This shows how crucial water is for plant survival.
