Measuring The Volume Of Irregular Shape And Cylinder

Welcome to class.

In order to find the volume of objects, you must measure the length, breadth or width and height. Then you multiply the length by the width and the height to give the volume of an object.

What are irregular shaped objects?

They are shapes without accurate length, height and width. Hence, there volume isn’t measurable. For example, Spoon, bulb, water, kerosene, petrol, Flower and many more.

So, how do we find the volume of an object with irregular shapes like these?

  1. We must use the fact volume is the space occupied by an object to help us to measure.
  2. Fill a measuring cylinder with water
  3. Throw a small ball into the cylinder either to displaced water or to increase it
  4. The increase in the volume of the water is equal to the volume of the ball
  5. Let’s assume the volume of initial water before throwing the ball is 200cm3 and the final volume is 250cm3
  6. Then we say that 250 cm3 – 200 cm3= 50 cm3. Then we have the volume of our irregular shapes.

This method is known as “Displacement method”
