CIVIL SOCIETY AND MORAL EDUCATION
Civil society organisations are social organisations which are formed to promote the interests and values of the common citizens.
Characteristics of Civil Society Organisations
- Membership is voluntary.
- They are autonomous from the government.
- They express their ideas collectively.
- Their demands are specific.
- They do not intend to seize power from the government.
- They have rules
- They are not violent
- They respect the authority of the government, for example, if they plan to hold a rally, and the police does not permit them, they will call off the rally.
- They check power abuse of government.
- They promote respect for the rule of law.
- They awaken people to their rights.
- Civil society organisations were very active in Nigeria during military rule.
- Many of them were formed to persuade the military to leave power. They mobilised the people to call for democracy.

Here is a list of some civil society organisations which have been active in
Nigeria.
- Campaign for Democracy (CD)
- Joint Action Committee of Nigeria (JACON)
- Citizens Forum for Constitutional Reform
- National Democratic Coalition (NADECO)
Many civil society organisations are made up of charities, professional and business associates, self-help organisations, clubs, ethnic groups and trade unions.
