Adding is used to find the total number of two or more quantities. The total is called the sum, or the number that results from the addition. You use addition to find the total distance that you travel if the first distance is 1,240 miles and the second distance is 530 miles. ADDITION OF NUMBER LINE

In the use of number line, a positive (+) move is to the right and a negative (-) move is to the left.

 

EXAMPLE1:

Solve the following on the number line.

  1. 2 + 3                              -3 + 5

Solution: 2 + 3   simply means starting from 2 and move 3 steps to right, the number where it stops is the answer.

Therefore, 2 + 3 = 5

  1. -3 + 5 simply means starting from -3 and move 5 steps to right, the number where it stops is the answer.

Therefore, -3 + 5 = 2
