Welcome to class!
In today’s class, we will be talking about living things and non-living things. We will also share about identification and classification of the state of matter. Enjoy the class!
Living things and non-living things
Living things are things that have life in them and have all characteristic of life. To be classified as a living thing, it must grow and develop, use energy, produce, adapt, and response to the environment. These are some of the example of human being, plants, bacteria, insects, animals, lichens, reptiles, mammals, trees, mosses, etc.
Non-living things are things that do not have life and they do not have a characteristic of life. A non-living thing is anything that was never alive. Example of a non-living thing includes a chair, table, books, bed, newspaper, clothes, bedsheets, curtains, bag, pen, etc.
Classification of matter
Matter is anything that has mass and can occupy space. Matter can be classified into three forms namely;
- Solid
- Gas
- Liquid
We will be breaking it down so you will under the concept and meaning of the above;
- Solid: A solid hold a definite shape and volume without a container.
- Gas: Gas is a compressible fluid, not only will a gas conform to the shape of its container but it will also expand to fill the container.
- Liquid: liquid mostly non-compressible fluid and can conform to the shape of its container but retains a (nearly) constant volume independent of pressure.
When solid changes into a liquid is called melting, when solid changes into gas is called sublimation, when gas changes into liquid is called condensation or liquefaction, gas to solid is called deposition, liquid to gas is called evaporation and lastly liquid to solid is called solidification or freezing.
In our next class, we will be talking about Living and Non-Living Things II. We hope you enjoyed the class.
