OUR VALUES II

Modern houses

Modern houses are built using recent designs, recent materials and recent technology. They are far more magnificent and comfortable than primitive houses. Modern houses can be found in large towns and cities. Some people build modern houses in villages as country houses.

Usually, modern houses are built with cement and concrete. They have glass windows, refined wooden doors (and metal doors and gates). The toilets, bathrooms and kitchens are within the house. Modern houses are of various designs. They have piped water supply and good waste disposal facilities.

Some examples of modern houses

  • Bungalow
  • Storey building
  • Duplex
  • Triplex

  • Block of flats

Making more people own houses

Whether a house is primitive or modern, it should provide safety, comfort and privacy. Many times, rented houses are expensive and do not provide the kind of comfort which people desire. Also, some landlords are overbearing and increase rents in an unreasonable way. For these reasons people wish to have their own homes.

Such people can be encouraged to build or buy their own houses in the following ways:

  • Parents and teachers should teach children to learn to save some part of their money regularly, so that they will learn the habit of saving money to acquire their own property.
  • People should find out how they can take advantage of the different housing schemes which the government has set up.
  • The government should establish more housing schemes and operate them in such a way that people can pay by installments over a period of time.
  • Government and non-governmental organisations should assist rural dwellers to build simple houses.
  • Government should advertise its various housing schemes, so that more people will know about them and take advantage of them.
  • Banks and mortgage institutions that have favorable housing schemes should advertise such schemes so that people can patronize them.
  • Banks and mortgage institutions should ensure that the conditions for getting loans are not harsh, so that more people can build houses.
  • Government should plan cities, towns and villages properly and provide social amenities (like electricity, pipe borne water and good roads) in all of these places, so that people will find almost everywhere desirable.
  • Government should ensure that those who manufacture and sell building materials sell at affordable prices, so that more people can buy them.
  • Government should encourage the use of cheaper local building materials.
