Hello children, welcome back to class

 

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Identify common animals around us
  • Name some of the common animals in their surroundings
  • Identify the characteristics of animals.
  • highlight features of common animals around us
  • use observable features to group the animals found around the locality.
  • understand benefits of animals to human beings and other living things

 

Some animals are also friendly to us while some are dangerous to us.

All animals including insects move, feed, reproduce, breathe, grow, excrete and die.

Important features of some common animals in their groups.

The pictures below show some common animals and some of their important features.

Some animals in their groups

Animals can be classified into the following groups:

  1. Mammals: human beings, dog, goat,
  2. Reptiles: lizard, snake, crocodile
  3. Birds: hen, pigeon, duck
  4. Insects: cat, cockroach, butterfly
  5. Amphibians: toad, frog

Importance of animals to man

  1. As a source of food e.g. meat, milk egg etc
  2. To provide hides and skin for leather
  3. As a source of income. E.g. farmers raise cattle, lambs, sheep to make a living
  4. Some animals work on farm e.g. oxen, horses, etc.
  5. Serves as transportation in some rural places. E.g horse, camel, donkey etc.
  6. They produce textile like wool, (which gotten from sheep) fur, or leather
