An examination is when the skills/ intellect of an individual is determined through a test by answering written or oral questions. Malpractice means unethical conduct done by a person.

Examination malpractice can, therefore, be defined as going against the rules or unethical conducts performed by an individual during a test or examination. Examination malpractice is mostly done by students who have not prepared enough for the exams. It is a situation where an examination outcome is influenced before, during or after.

Types of examination malpractices

  1. Impersonation: This is when an individual who is supposed to sit for an exam hires someone else to get the exam done. The individual claims the identity of the candidate. the original
  2. Prior knowledge: This is when candidates already know exam questions or answers before the time of examination.
  3. Conspiracy: This is a kind of secret agreement between 2 or more candidates to assist each other to answer the exam questions, e.g. whispering.
  4. External assistance: This is when another person outside the examination hall helps a candidate to answer the entire exam questions and passing it across to the candidate.
  5. Smuggling: This is when a candidate, without permission, takes into the exam room information relevant to the exam questions, e.g. written answers, text and notebooks, etc. Other types are Giraffing, Assault on exam officials.

Effects of examination malpractice

  1. Discouragement of students from hard work.
  2. Increased rate of bribery and corruption.
  3. It leads to a loss of credibility on the educational institutions in the economy and the certificate is given.
  4. Guilty ones who are caught face punishment, shame, embarrassment, expulsion/ dismissal.
  5. The behavioural pattern of cheating will continue with the individuals involved.
