The procedure for voting

The following are the procedures for voting.

  • Accreditation: On getting to the polling unit, a voter must present himself to the electoral officer in charge to ascertain his/her name on the list of registered voters and to know whether the voter is in the appropriate polling unit to vote. An accreditation card is given to a qualified registered voter to show he/she is eligible, qualified and registered before the voting begins.
  • Sharing of Ballot Papers: After accreditation has taken place, the electoral officer hands over ballot papers to the accredited names, each voter is expected to be on the queue in an orderly manner to exercise their voting rights.
  • Voting: The voting begins properly, the voters on the queue moves to vote cubicle to thumbprint on their ballot papers for the candidate of their choice. They drop the paper into a ballot box.
  • Thumb Marking: After the voter casts his/her vote, the thumbnail is marked with ink to indicate the voter has voted. This is done to avoid double voting.

Importance of election

  • Change in government: Elections bring about change in people that represent the country. It gives the platform to allow other people to rule and choose leaders who will make decisions on their behalf.
  • A platform for expressing concern: Election is a platform for expressing displeasure over a particular government, it helps the people to speak out their minds on their dislikes about a particular person who wants the political post.
  • Appointment of leaders: Election brings about the appointment of new leaders into the government especially when it is the people’s choice. It brings people into new and responsible post
  • Legitimacy: Election makes a new leader or government that comes into power to be legitimate because it entails the popular support of the people. Citizens are always willing to abide by rules and policies made by the government.
  • Decision-making process: Election helps the decision making of the country. By choosing their leaders and representatives, people are in one way or another taking part in the decision making of their country.
