Introduction to Staging a Play

Welcome to class.

Staging is the process of selecting, designing or modifying the performance space for a play or film. This includes the use of stage craft element as well as the structure of the stage.

Types of stage

  • Thrust stage: Is the process whereby the audience surrounds the stage on the three side.
  • Round stage: The audience surrounds the stage on all sides.
  • Proscenium stage: The playing area extends behind an opening called proscenium arch. The audience sits on one side looking into the action.
  • Scene design stage: Is the transformation of a bare stage into the world of the play. It consists of sets lighting, costumes and props.
  • Arena theatres: Is a large-scale auditorium and have a central stage area with audience on all sides. It is more like a sport arena.
  • Open-air theatre stage: is an outdoor stage that does not have a roof but the audience seating will be covered.
  • Promenade theatre stage: It involve the audience moving from one place to another following the actors and performance a non-traditional theatre space such as home or warehouse often reflecting the history and atmosphere of a particular location.
