Temptation is the strong desire to do something that is wrong. It is the encouragement to do evil and commit sin. Temptations in itself is not sin but when we obey that strong desire to do what is evil then we have sinned. But at all times, God has provided a way out of our temptations.
Causes of Temptations (James 1: 12-15)
The causes of temptations are as follows:
Selfishness: we are tempted when we all want all things for ourselves.
Pride: feeling important than others can lead to temptations
Love of money and other material things of the world.
Unemployment: lack of job can lead one into stealing and other corrupt practices
Keeping bad company: when you keep bad friends, you stand the risk of being tempted
Drug abuse: when a person abuses drugs excessively, they lose their mind, self-control and commit crimes.
Ways of overcoming temptations (Luke 12: 13-21)
We can overcome temptations through the following ways:
Prayer
Fasting
Turning away from evil and doing good
Having self-control
Being disciplined
Be happy and contented with what you have
Avoid selfishness
Avoiding wrong company
