Memory verse: And at midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God and the prisoners heard them. Acts 16:25

  • The meaning of the spirit of divination.

The spirit of divination is a demonic or satanic spirit that tells or sees a future event.

  • Paul casts out a spirit of divination (Acts 16: 16-19)

Paul and Silas were going to the place of prayer. On their way, they met a slave girl who was possessed with the spirit of divination by which she tells future events and she made money from that for her masters. She followed Paul and Silas, shouting, “These men are servants of the Highest God, who are telling you the way to be saved”. She continued saying this for days and this got Paul annoyed. He rebuked and commanded the spirit out of the girl. When the master realized that the girl had been delivered and the hope of getting money has been destroyed. They captured Paul and Silas and dragged them to the market to face the authorities.

  • The conversion and baptism of the jailer (Acts 16: 20-34)

They were brought before the magistrate and the masters of the slave girl told them that Paul and Silas had brought uproar in the city by preaching customs unlawful for the Romans to accept. The crowd joined them in attacking Paul and Silas. So, the magistrate ordered them to be stripped and flogged after which they were jailed with chains on their hands and feet.

About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God while the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly, there was an earthquake and the foundations of the prison shook. Immediately the doors opened and the chains loosed. The jailer was afraid and immediately drew out his sword to kill himself but Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here”. The jailer was afraid and he asked Paul what he needed to do to be saved. Paul told him to believe in the Lord Jesus and he and his household would be saved. The jailer and his household were saved because they believed in Jesus Christ and they were saved.

  • The release of Paul and Silas (Acts 16:35-40)

At dawn, the magistrate ordered that Paul and Silas be released. But Paul refused! He told the officers that they were beaten publicly without a trial and now they want to release them quietly even when they were Roman citizens.  He requested that the magistrate should come and escort them. The officers reported to the magistrate what Paul said and told them that they were Roman citizens. The magistrate was alarmed and apologized. Then they released them.
