Duties of citizens to constituted authority

  1. Obedience to the law: Every good citizen must obey the laws, rules and regulations made by the constituted authority, to ensure peaceful co-existence in society. When rules are broken, there is disorder, and peace will be disturbed.
  2. Payment of taxes and rates: Sources of income to the government include taxes, rates, and levies. When these are paid, the government can provide some services for the benefit of the citizens. It is the duty of every good citizen to pay their taxes, rates, and levies correctly and promptly.
  3. Voting during elections: It is the civic responsibility of every qualified citizen, who has attained the age of eighteen years, to vote during elections. Voting is important to change government and leaders.
  4. Honesty and loyalty: Every citizen must be honest and loyal to the government. Honesty, they say, is the best policy. A good citizen should be truthful in all his ways. A good citizen must be loyal to his government and the country.
  5. Punctuality at work: A good citizen must get to work early. If the time to resume is 8.00 a.m., the good citizen should be at the workplace before 8.00 a.m. In addition, he or she must be regular at work that is, coming to work daily on the working days.
  6. Dedication to duty: A good citizen must show commitment to his or her work. They must give of their best to ensure that the work is done very well.
  7. Effective service delivery: Every citizen owes the country a duty to perform his or her work well. A good citizen must ensure that the goal of the organisation he or she works for is achieved.
  8. Contribution to the development of society: Every good citizen should be involved in the progress of his or her community. Every good citizen must participate in any project for the common good of the people, e.g. building of roads and culverts in the local community.
  9. Respect for the dignity and religion of others: Nigeria is made up of many ethnic groups as well as religious groups. As good citizens, we should give due respect to our different religions, e.g. Islam, Christianity, and Traditional Religion. This will encourage our goal of peaceful co-existence in the country.
