MODERATION IN CHRISTIAN LIFE (GALATIANS 5: 22-23)

welcome back to class

What is Moderation?

Moderation is the ability to do something in a controlled and reasonable manner. It means having self-control and avoiding being excessive in all we do as Christians.

The opposite of excess is moderation. Paul taught Christians not to be filled with wine in excess but to be filled with the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18). When we live in moderation, it shows that we have the Holy Spirit in us. So, we must live a life of moderation.

  • Moderation in eating and drinking. (Daniel 1:6-16)

The king of Babylon took Daniel and his friends as captives in Babylon. They were chosen to serve in the palace so the king ordered that they be fed from his own rich food and strong wine. But Daniel and his friends refused to eat the king’s food nor drink the king’s wine because the food had been sacrificed to idols. They requested for water and vegetables.

  • Evil of smoking. ( Proverbs 20:1)

Smoking is dangerous to man’s health. When a man smokes, it damages the liver which leads to sudden death. God forbids smoking and warns to take away from smoking cigarette, tobacco, drugs etc.

  • Alcoholism (1 Cor 6:10, Gal 5:21)

God warns His children from being a drunkard. This is because no drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God. A drunkard cannot be moderate and cannot practice self-control. They talk loosely, act wildly and destroy things. As Christians, God expects us to do away with alcohol.
