Memory verse: And he fell to the earth and heard a voice saying unto him Saul, Saul, why persecutes thou me? Acts 9:4

  1. The meaning of conversion

The word conversion means the process of changing or causing something to change from one form to another.  Also, it is the fact of changing one’s religious beliefs.

  1. Paul’s proposal journey to Damascus (Acts 9: 1-9)

The Jewish leaders did not believe in what the Christians taught. They condemned their teachings and called it blasphemy. Blasphemy is a teaching against God.  The Christian’s teaching was so convincing that many people believed that Jesus is the son of God. This made the Jewish leaders afraid at what was happening. Paul was not also happy that Christianity was fast growing and a threat to Judaism. So he went to the High Priest and got a letter to the synagogues (places of worship) in Damascus that if he found any man or woman calling the name of Jesus, he would bring them bound to Jerusalem for punishment.

  • Paul’s conversion, baptism and mission(Acts 9:10-19, 20-30)

After Paul had received a letter from the High Priest to arrest the Christians in the synagogues in Damascus, he embarked on the journey. As he journeyed, he came near Damascus and suddenly a light from heaven shined around him and he fell to the ground. He heard a voice saying to him: ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ When Paul asked, ‘Who are You, Lord?’; he was told ‘I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting.’

He asked Jesus what he should do. Jesus told him to rise up from the ground and go to the city and he would be told what to do. When he got up, he was blind and was led by the hand into Damascus, where he fasted for three days.

Meanwhile, in Damascus God told a certain disciple called Ananias in a vision to go to the street called Straight and ask for a man from Tarsus called Saul and pray for him to receive his sight. Ananias complained to the Lord about the wicked things Paul had been doing to Christians in Jerusalem and his mission in Damascus. But the Lord said that Paul had been converted since he had met Jesus on the way and he was now willing to obey the Lord. Ananias went, laid hands on Paul, prayed for him and immediately Paul regained his sight rose up and was baptized.

Paul’s baptism was a public announcement that he had become a Christian and a member of a church. And straightway, he joined fellow believers in Damascus in worship and began to preach Jesus is the son of God. The Lord told Paul that He would use him to preach the gospel to the Gentiles (non-Jews).
