Scratch is a fun and easy way for beginners to learn computer programming concepts. But the greatest value of Scratch is not just the ability to create programmes. 

It also equips students with underlying transferable skills in problem solving, algorithmic thinking, logic, graphic design and user interface. Scratch also helps students develop the right attitude toward learning Authentic learning, that is: project based, real world learning. 

Whether you are building computer games or developing security software, the problem solving skills you develop are useful and transferable in any personal, professional, organisational or entrepreneurial environment.

Scratch is a free online programming tool for children to help them to learn block-based coding. The coding language used is simple, and it has an easy-to-use interface, so children can create their own games.

Teaching coding with Scratch in the classroom is particularly useful, as it helps children develop their:

  • Problem-solving Skills
  • Creativity
  • Self-expression; and
  • It promotes equity in computing.

Scratch is designed for children between the ages of 8 and 16, and Scratch Junior allows children between the ages of 5-7 to use a simplified version.

Based on a block-building approach, it uses a simple structure of visual bricks or blocks of computer code that snap and interlock together.
