We are eager to have you join us !!
In today’s Christian Religious Studies class, We will be discussing John The Baptist (The Forerunner of Jesus). We hope you enjoy the class!
The Forerunner of Jesus (Mark 1: 1-8, Luke 3: 1-20)
A forerunner is someone who prepares the way or lays the foundation, announces the works of another who is greater than him. Isaiah had prophesied the coming of a messenger ahead of Christ ( Ish 40:3-5). He was John the Baptist the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (Luke 1:36) who was a forerunner before the ministry of Jesus started.
John’s work was to prepare the minds of the people for the coming of Jesus Christ. He prepared their minds by preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin. John baptized the people and called upon them to repent of their sins. These sins include fighting, stealing, cheating, lying, having sex before marriage or outside marriage. John told them that they needed a change of heart because their sins had separated them from God. He further told them that they should not think because they had Abraham as their father, they had no need of repentance.
All the people who listened to John felt sorry for their sins and so they confessed all their sins to John who then baptized them in the River Jordan. John advised the ordinary people who were selfish and lacked love to show love and kindness to one another by sharing what they had with those who had none. The tax collectors were advised to stop the evil practices of cheating people by collecting more than the required tax and to start collecting the exact amount of tax. The soldiers also came to ask John what they should do, he advised them to stop the violent behaviour and be gentle in their dealings with people.
The people asked John whether he was the Christ but he told them that he was not, but his work of baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins was to prepare their mind for the coming of the Saviour. And Jesus would baptize them with the Holy Spirit which is the power of God.
We have come to the end of this class. We do hope you enjoyed the class?
