The Visit of the Wise Men from the East (Mathew 2: 1-12)

Soon after Jesus was born, the wise men from the East came to meet Herod at Jerusalem and asked him, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him”.

Herod was deeply disturbed by their question, as was all of Jerusalem. He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law. “Where did the prophets say the Messiah would be born?” he asked them. “In Bethlehem,” they said, “for this is what the prophet wrote: ‘O Bethlehem of Judah, you are not just a lowly village in Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.'”

King Herod called the wise men secretly to find out the exact time that the star appeared to them. And sent them to Bethlehem of Judea to go and search for the child and that when they have found Him, they should come and inform him so that he would go and worship Him.

The wise men left the palace and the star they had seen in the East guided them to Bethlehem till it came and stood over the house where Jesus was born.

They were filled with joy; they fell down and worshipped Him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

In the night, an angel of the Lord appeared to the wise men in a dream and told them not to return to Herod because Herod would come and kill the child (Jesus). So the wise men took another route to their country.

Significance of the Visit of the Wise Men

  1. The visit of the wise men shows that Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the whole of mankind.
  2. The gold gift signifies the royal background of Jesus. Jesus was from the royal lineage of David and He was to be the prince who would bring peace and love into the world.
  3. The frankincense gift signifies His spiritual work which shows us the fullest means of having a good relationship with God and with each other.
  4. Myrrh was used to preserve dead bodies from decay. Therefore the Myrrh gift signifies Jesus’ death on the cross to save mankind.
