THE MIRACLES OF JESUS CHRIST
Miracles – Jesus Christ identified Himself with the pains and sufferings of people through His healing ministry.
1. The Centurion’s Servant (Matt 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10)
When Jesus came to Capernaum, a centurion, (an army officer in charge of one hundred soldiers) who had a slave that was dear to him and was sick to the point of death, sent elders to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant, this is according to Luke.
But according to Matthew, the centurion himself went to Jesus and said: “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress”. Jesus promised to come and heal him. But the centurion answered, “Lord I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, just give the order, and my servant will get well”.
When Jesus heard him, He marvelled and said to those following Him, “Truly I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you many will come from east and west and sit at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, their men will weep and gnash their teeth”. Jesus told the centurion that it will be done for him as he had believed. The servant was immediately healed.
2. The Paralytic Man (Matt 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12)
Jesus Christ came to Capernaum and a lot of people came to Him and filled the house where He stayed to the extent that there was no space for anyone to pass by the door.
As Jesus was preaching to the people, a paralytic man, carried by four men, was brought to Him. When the men could not gain entrance to Jesus through the door because of the crowd, they made an opening through the roof of the house and lowered him down in front of Jesus where He was preaching. When Jesus saw the faith of those that brought him, He said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven.”
Some of the scribes regarded the words of Jesus as blasphemous because they reasoned that only God could forgive sins. Jesus knew their thoughts, He turned to them and asked them, which was easier to say to the paralytic, your sins are forgiven or to say rise and take your pallet and walk? He told the paralytic man to go home. The man rose from his bed and went home.
The healing of the paralytic proves that Jesus has the power or authority to forgive sins. He healed the paralytic man of both physical and spiritual uncleanness.
3. The Gadarene Demoniac (Mark 5: 1 -10)
Jesus Christ and His disciple came into the country of the Gerasenes. There, they met a man with an unclean spirit who lived among the tombs.
No one could bind him even with chains because several times had he broken the chains and fetters with which he was bound
When the demoniac saw Jesus, he ran and worshipped Him and begged Jesus not to torment him. Jesus asked the unclean spirit for his name and he said, “Legion, for we are many”. The unclean spirits then begged Jesus not to send them out of the country but into the swine feeding on a nearby hill. Immediately Jesus cast them out, all the evil spirits entered into the herd of swine. They rushed down into the sea and perished.
The herdsmen fled and told the people in the city and in the country. People came to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. The herdsmen begged Jesus to leave their neighbourhood.
As Jesus was leaving, the man that was just healed begged to follow Jesus. But Jesus refused and said to him, Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has shown mercy on you. The man left and began to proclaim in Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him and everyone marvelled.
Moral Lesson
- Jesus cared and had sympathy for the sick, so we must always care for the sick and help the handicapped.
- The sick had faith in Jesus power to heal them and they were healed so we must learn to have faith in God’s healing power through Jesus Christ.
- Jesus helped Jews and foreigners to show that His salvation is for everybody. So as Christians we must learn to pray to Jesus to help everybody that comes our way irrespective of their race etc.
- The sin of the paralytic caused his sickness. So as Christians we must not live in sin, in order to avoid falling ill.
- The centurion showed humility which resulted in the healing of his servant, we must be humble for God to exalt us.
- Jesus Christ has power over unclean spirit, thus, He has the power to set us free when we are being oppressed by any demoniac power.
