The Power of Jesus Christ over Death

Death is the loss of life. It is the power that takes away life. It causes the separation of one person from another and this can be painful and sorrowful. Jesus Christ did not only sympathize with the bereaved, but He went further to raise their dead ones back to life which proves that God has power over death.

1. Then Widow’s Son at Nain (Luke 7: 11-17)

Jesus Christ and His disciples went to a city called Nain and a large crowd followed Him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out of the city to be buried. He was the only son of his mother who was a widow and a large crowd went with her consoling her of her loss.

When Jesus saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep”. Then Jesus moved towards the coffin and touched it and the carriers stood still. Jesus said to the dead man, “Young man I say to you, arise”. Immediately the dead man sat up and began to speak and Jesus gave him to his mother. All the people became afraid and they glorified God saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us and God has visited His people.

The story spread throughout the land of Judea and all the surrounding countries. It demonstrates God’s love and concern for those who sorrow. It also shows that Jesus has power over death.

2. The Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45)

A man named Lazarus lived in Bethany near Jerusalem with his sisters, Mary and Martha.

Lazarus fell seriously ill and the sisters sent for Jesus to come and heal him. Jesus did not go to them immediately, He delayed for two days. He told His disciples that Lazarus was asleep and that they will go and wake him but Jesus knew that Lazarus was dead. By the time Jesus got to Bethany, Lazarus has died and has been buried in a tomb.

When Martha heard that Jesus had arrived, she went to meet Him and said that if Jesus had been there earlier, her brother would not have died. But even now that he is dead, she believes that God will give Jesus whatever He asks of Him. Martha thought that would be on the last day. Jesus said to her,”I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” And she said she believed. She went away to call her sister Mary.

Mary came with sympathizers, weeping. She also told Jesus that if He had come earlier, her brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping he was moved and He also wept.

They went to the tomb where Lazarus was buried and Jesus told them to roll away the stone at the entrance of the tomb. Martha expressed to Him the fact that the body would have been smelling after four days. The stone was rolled away, Jesus gave thanks and prayed to God; He called Lazarus with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out”, and the dead man came out with his hands and feet bound with bandages. And Jesus ordered them to unbind him and let him go.

Many of the Jews believed in Him while some went to report Jesus to the Pharisees. The miracle proves that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. It also proves Jesus power over death. The miracle was performed in order to make the people have faith in Him. It proves Jesus as the Messiah.

Moral Lesson
  1. As Christians, we must show concern and sympathy for those who are in sorrow as Jesus did.
  2. The raising up of the widow’s son and Lazarus from the death show that Jesus has the power to bring the dead back to life.
  3. We should call upon God in time of need and trouble.

Is it possible for a Christian to have such a power that raises dead like Jesus Christ? If the answer is yes. How?
