Ways Of Preventing Common Illness

Welcome to class, I hope you enjoyed the last class. Today we will be talking about ways of preventing common illness. Follow me closely and you will understand what we are about to talk about.

An illness is a disease or sickness affecting the body. When we are sick, our body don’t feel the way they do normally. In Nigeria, there are certain illnesses that occur more often. Such diseases include diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, tetanus, typhoid fever, whooping cough, craw-craw, cholera, cold, catarrh, measles, kwashiorkor, and yellow fever.

Causes of Diseases/Illness

Diseases are caused by harmful germs, such as bacteria and viruses, which are introduced into the body. Malaria is introduced into our bodies when we get bitten by a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite. Malaria is one of the most common and serious diseases affecting Nigeria and other African countries.

Malaria can be prevented by removing the places mosquitoes can breed. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.

Other major causes of diseases are:

• Lack of good personal hygiene.
• Lack of good community hygiene.
• Carelessness
• Lack of good diet/food.
• Contact with people;e who carry infectious diseases.

Ways to Prevent Illness/Disease

One way by which we can prevent illness/ disease is by personal hygiene.

Personal hygiene is keeping our bodies and clothes clean. This involves having our bath regularly, cleaning our teeth after each meal, washing and ironing our clothes, combing and cutting our hair and cutting our nails, etc. It also entails keeping our surroundings clean. We can prevent the spread of diseases such as malaria by cleaning the gutters in our communities and neighborhood so as to ensure there is no stagnant water.

In a nutshell, diseases/illnesses can be prevented by:

• Keeping our environment clean.
• Taking proper care of our bodies and clothes.
• Taking immunization.
• Eating a good diet.
• Drinking good water.
• Visiting the doctor immediately for treatment so that it will not spread to other people.
