ETHNIC GROUPS IN NIGERIA
Ethnic groups are group of people who share the same culture. They usually live in the same area. They speak the same language. They usually eat the same types of food ad wear the same kinds of clothes. It is important to be nice to people who are ethnic groups different from our own. Our country belongs to all of us. We all have to live in it together.
There are three major ethnic group in Nigeria, and they are: Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.
Origin of Yoruba
Once upon a time, Olodumare the creator, lowered a chain from heaven down to Ile- Ife. Olodumare sent Oduduwa down the chain with a cock, some sand and a palm- kernel. Oduduwa threw the sand into the water and the cock scratched it to become land. The palm kernel grew into a big tree and sixteen branches. The sixteen branches became the first sixteen kingdoms of Yoruba land.
Yoruba people live all over the world. Most of them live in Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Lagos and Kwara states in Nigeria.
Origin of the Hausa
A long time ago, Bayajidda was a prince in a place called Baghad. He travelled a lot, and one day he went to Daura, a city in Katsina State. There was a giant snake there called Sarki. Sarki had been preventing people from fetching water from the only well in the city. Bayajidda killed Sarki. The Queen of Daura married him as a reward. Bayajidda and the Queen had a son whom they named Bawo. Bawo had seven sons who became the founders and rulers of the Hausa state: Biram, Daura, Gobir, Kano, Katsina, Rawo and Zaria.
Most Hausa people live in Bauch, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi,
Sokoto, and Zamfara States.
Origin of the Igbo
Many people believed that the Igbos came all the way from Israel and settled in south-east Nigeria. Israel is very far away from Nigeria. It is in a place called the middle East. We can find Igbo people in Anambra, Abia, Delta, Enugu, Ebonyi and Imo States.
There are different languages in Nigeria, the government had to choose one to be the official language. This would be a language everybody understands. The official language in Nigeria is English.
