In today’s class, we will be talking about Geographical Terms. Enjoy the class!

GEOGRAPHICAL TERMS

Geographical terms are words that name physical features of the earth. Some common geographical terms are:

Island:

An Island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. Examples of Islands in Nigeria include Victoria Island in Lagos State and Bonny Island in Rivers state.

Hill

A Hill is an area of land higher than its surroundings but smaller than a mountain. Examples of hills in Nigeria include: Idanre Hills in Ondo State and Udi Hills in Enugu State.

Lake

A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land. Examples of lakes in Nigeria include Lake Chad and Lake Kainji.

River

A river is a natural stream of water that flows through land and empties into an ocean or a lake. Popular rivers in Nigeria include River Niger and River Benue.

Confluence

A confluence is a point at which two rivers meets. The River Niger and Benue meet at Lokoja, in Kogi State.

Mountain

A mountain is a high and often rocky area of land mass with steep or sloping sides. Examples of mountains include Mount Everest, located on the border between Nepal and Tibet, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Ocean

 

An ocean is a wide area of salty water. There are five oceans in the world: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world.

Rainforest

Rain forest are forest that rows in area where there is a lot of rain.

EVALUATION

Explain the following geographical terms

  3. Mountain
  4. Island
