Meaning and Categories of Drugs
– Drugs are substances that can change how our body works. They can be natural (from plants) or synthetic (human-made).
– Drugs can have different effects on our body and mind, such as making us feel better, worse, or different.
– Drugs can be used for good reasons, such as treating diseases, preventing infections, or relieving pain.
– Drugs can also be used for bad reasons, such as getting high, escaping problems, or harming others.
Categories of drugs
– There are many types of drugs, but they can be grouped into four main categories based on their effects on our brain and nervous system. These categories are:
– Stimulants: These are drugs that speed up our brain and body functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. They can make us feel more alert, energetic, and confident. Examples of stimulants are caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, and amphetamines.
– Depressants: These are drugs that slow down our brain and body functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. They can make us feel more relaxed, calm, and sleepy. Examples of depressants are alcohol, heroin, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.
– Hallucinogens: These are drugs that alter our perception of reality, such as sight, sound, taste, and touch. They can make us see, hear, or feel things that are not there. Examples of hallucinogens are LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, and ketamine.
– Inhalants: These are drugs that are breathed in through the nose or mouth, such as gases, vapors, or sprays. They can affect our brain and body in different ways, depending on the substance. Examples of inhalants are glue, paint, gasoline, and nitrous oxide.
