TYPES OF HOME ACCIDENTS AND PREVENTION

Fall: This occur when family members slip, slips on wet floor or slippery tiles, slips from steps on banana peels, miss step and fall, catching feet on loose dangling lines or wires of electrical gadgets as well as catching feet on clustered furniture or equipment.

Prevention: Keep the floor dry and clean

Arrange all furniture and equipment orderly.

Keep electrical plug cables away and hide them under the carpet.

 

Bruises/Sprain: Bruises: Bruises are caused by hard objects being rubbed against the body. They are also caused by the impact of a fall or something forceful or hard hitting any part of the body. Examples include hitting one leg against the table or chair, accidentally closing a door against your finger or something heavy dropping on you from a shelf, among others. On the other hand, sprain occur when a person suddenly misses his/her steps and the ankle is twisted sharply or when a person suddenly steps on hard unstable objects.

Prevention: Be careful with your steps.

Remove every unstable object away from path of movement.

 

Burn and Scald: Burn happens when a person gets in contact with open fire or hot object. Burns are caused by hot objects like hot iron, hot water, fire, part of motor vehicles or appliances which get hot, pressing iron, hot plates, etc., unexpectedly touching any part of the body. Around the home, burn are caused by fire from cooking, hot water or oil being spilled on or splashed on a person, among others. Scald are caused by hot water, oil or acid touching any part of the body and removing the surface skin. Scald happens as a result of steam or hot water getting in contact with the skin.

 

Prevention: Turn off stoves and hot plates when not in use.

Handle electric iron with care.

Be careful when you handle hot water, pots and kettle.

 

Cuts: This occur when the skin gets in contact with very sharp objects like kitchen knife, blade, etc.

Prevention: Keep away sharp objects when not in use.

When the need to use arise, handle with care.

Use scissors or nail clip to cut nails, do not use blade.
