In the schools, there are a number of accidents which result from students playing with their friends using the school facilities and materials. The following are some of the types of accidents in the school:
- Cuts: this is a break or piercing of the skin which let blood out of the body. This may occur while using cutlass, knife, razor blade and other sharp edged metals used in schools. Broken bottles may also result in cuts.
- Burns: it is the burning from naked fire or chemicals that come in contract with the body.
- Electrical shocks: the accident which results from careless or indiscriminate handling of electrical gadgets or fitting. Exposed or live wire in school may also be responsible.
- Falls: Bumpy, undulated staircase or other fall induced surface constitute sources of school accidents.
- Dislocation: This is bone dislocation or displacement resulting from play on the school field or with other facilities.
Other accidents in the school are:
- Running into a wall in class and falling down
- Cutting oneself with a razor blade while sharpening a pencil
- Falling down and breaking a tooth while fighting in class
- Bumping into each other while running in class
- Desk hurting when you want to sit down.
- Cutting the nails.
- Stepping on a stone or broken glass.
- Cutting one’s fingers on the door.
- Car hitting school children.
- Bicycle accident.
- Knife cut.
- Stepping on stone.
- Falling down a hole.
- Burnt by fire.
- Electric shock.
Ways of Preventing Accidents in the School
As maintained above, accidents in schools are preventable and avoidable, these are some of the ways of preventing accidents in the school.
- Remove all dangerous things from the ground, that is, all possible obstacle that can cause accidents on the field and the entire school environments.
- Students should not play with dangerous instruments such as cutlass, knife, blade, chemicals, etc.
- Safety instructions should be provided in the school and strictly followed by everybody.
- Avoid exposed or live electricity cable or wire
- General cleanliness of the environment and maintenance of the school facilities.
How to prevent accidents in the school
- Stop running in the classroom
- Be careful when using a razor blade.
- Use a sharpener instead of a razor blade.
- Make sure that the desk are arranged properly.
- Keep the floor clean and ensure that there is no water on the floor.
- Take victims to hospital.
- Stop opening the door so often
- Remove all dangerous things from the ground.
- Do not play with dangerous instruments.
- Avoid (live) electric cable/wire.
- Fill the holes in the school.
- Wear shoes all the times.
- Look down when you are moving.
- Remove all stones, nails, pieces, of glass and wire from the compound.
Steps to take when accidents occur in the school
- Report accidents to parents/elderly person/teacher
- Give first aid care.
- Take victim to a nearby hospital or clinic.
- Remove what caused the accidents.
