Jacob’s Encounter with God

Jacob’s encounter with God. (Genesis 32: 22-32)

Jacob encounter God in an extra ordinary way!  Jacob is one of the twins of Isaac and Rebecca. His twin brother is called Esau.

Do you want to know why Jacob’s encounter with God is extra ordinary? Jacob wrestled with God!

Jacob wants to reunite with Esau, his twin brother after many years. So, he took his two wives (Rachael and Leah), his servants and his eleven sons to meet Esau. When they came to a river, he took them across and was left alone.

At night, a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man realized he could not defeat Jacob in the wrestling he twisted the hollow of his hip and the hollow of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as he wrestled with him. And he told Jacob to let him go but Jacob said he will not allow him to go until he bless him.

The man asked Jacob “What is your name?” And he said Jacob.

“Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel because you have struggled with God and with human and you have overcome.” (Gen 32:28)

Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”

Then he blessed him there.

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel because he saw God face to face and yet his life was spared.  As the sun rose, he went on his way limping because of his twisted hip.

Because of that the children of Israel do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip up till today.

Right attitude to be taken when God is speaking. (Exodus 34: 27-35)

Moses was with the Lord forty days and forty night without any food or water, and he wrote on two tablets the words of the covenant-the Ten commandments.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. Aaron and all the Israelites were afraid to look at his face because his face was radiant. Later Aaron and the Israelites came near him and he gave them all the commands the lord had given him on Mount Sinai.

When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out to tell the Israelites what the Lord had commanded.
