The term ‘salt of the earth’

The term ‘The salt of the earth refers to the qualities of a good Christian.’

“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men”

 

Uses of salt

Salt is everywhere. It is in sea water, in the soil, in our bodies. We use salt every day in our homes.

We add salt to the food that we cook to give it taste. Salt gives our food quality. People also use salt to preserve fish to prevent it from decay.

Christians as salt of the earth.

By comparing Christians as the salt to the salt of the earth, Jesus is teaching us the qualities of a good Christian. A good Christian is one who is everywhere, practicing the word of God. By doing so, he gives quality to the life in society. He helps to preserve the good life which everybody must follow for everyone to have peace, unity, and progress.

Therefore, as Christians, we should be well behaved. We should be obedient, respectful, honest, humble, cheerful, and hardworking.

Salt is always used in small quantities, which teaches us to be contented always. We should not overdo things. Too much salt can spoil the taste of food.

Qualities expected from Christians as salt of the earth. Matt 5:11-16

  5. Cheerfulness
  6. Diligence etc.
