Communication

Communication is the passage of information from one place to another or from one person to another. It is the exchange of information or ideas between persons or groups of persons. It is a two-way process, which means a person the information and another receives and understands it. It can be verbal, which entails speaking. It can be non-verbal which entails communication without speaking using signs and body language.

Types/forms of communication

There are two types of communication. These are:

  • Traditional Communication
  • Modern Communication

Traditional form of communication are those which our people used to send and receive messages. Although some of these means are no longer used today. Some are still in use. Examples include town crier, messenger, fire signal, talking drum, talking, gong, body sign, and flute, symbol of various objects, gun, and bush burning/smoke, among others. These means of communication are slow and not reliable. Sometimes messages were not delivered, and other times messengers would get lost.

Modern form of communication are the modern way information are exchanged today. Examples of modern form of communication include radio, television, telephone, telegraph, letter, email, fax, internet, billboards, post, newspapers, and magazines, among others. It is faster and more reliable.

Difference between traditional and modern system of communication

  1. The modern means of communication send messages to greater distances than the traditional means of communication.
  2. The modern means are faster and reliable than the traditional means of communication.
  3. The modern means are used to send messages more clearly and accurately than the traditional means.
  4. The modern means are more costly than the traditional means.
  5. The modern means makes use of electricity, aero planes, motor vehicles while the traditional means do not make use of such.

 

Problem of modern means of communication

  1. Pornography
  2. Import alien culture.
  3. Poor services from network.
  4. Prone to online fraud such as 419.
  5. It is very costly/expensive.

Solutions

  1. Legislation against poor service delivery.
  2. Consistency
  3. Respect for user of services.
  4. Selfless services.
  5. Patriotism
