Introduction to Collage
Collage is the art of pasting on a simple surface, diverse materials normally not associated with one another. The term ‘Collage’ was derived from the French word ‘collar’ meaning ‘give’. It was coined by both cubist painters, George Braque and Pablo Picasso at the beginning of the 20th century.
Collage and its techniques
- Painting: (i.) The technique of painting with paper (ii.) The mixed combination of paper fabric with paint.
- Music collage: it is otherwise known as sound collage, with the development and exploration of recording technology.
- Literary collage: it can be referred to as the art of layering ideas and images.
- Illustration: Here prominent coloured papers are cut to shape and coloured with crayon and bound together to tell a story. This is a technique commonly used for illustration of children’s picture books.
- Fashion: in this influence, sketching or drawings with diverse materials like paper, photographs, yarns, fabrics in a mixed illustration bring the designer’s idea into a design.
- Photography: in this area of art, collage is made from photographs or parts of photographs which is called photomontage.
- Digital collage: this is the technique of using computer tools in the art of creating collage otherwise known as e-collage.
- Collage in film: this is the juxtaposition of different scenic footages to make a single set or a continuous roll of film e.g newsreel.
Simple step to inspiring your first collage
- Decide a theme such as fruit basket.
- Choose your medium: collage is so vast and unlimited in the choice of medium.
- Materials and tools; like pencil/coloured pen, glue, scissors, watercolour, paint, glitter, cardboard paper.
- Cut different shapes from your variety of materials
- Paste cut-ups onto the base.
Difference between mosaic and collage in painting
- Medium: collage enjoys a vast and unlimited range if medium ranging from organic to inorganic materials while mosaic is restricted to strong organic materials only.
- Pattern: collage enjoys very flexible patterns of execution as the material can be laid overlapping one another, while in the case of mosaic a distinct side by side or head to head pattern is employed in its execution.
- Longevity: mosaic has a characteristic to last longer than a collage
- Age: in the history of art and techniques, the mosaic was known as a form of art years before collage.
- Strength: mosaic is known for its durability and strength due to its choice of medium of more hard materials while collage is fragile and given the choice of mostly soft materials that cannot survive outdoors.
