Meaning And Symptoms of Diseases
Diseases is a particular abnormal condition that adversely affects the structure or function of all or part of an organism and is not immediately due to any external injury.
Diseases are often known to be medical conditions that are associated with specific signs and symptoms. A disease may be caused by external factors such as pathogens like we learned in our last class, or by internal dysfunctions.
A pathogen is an organism that causes disease.
A body is naturally full of microbes. However, these microbes only cause a problem if the immune system is weakened or if they manage to enter a normally sterile part of the body.
In humans, disease is often used more to refer to any condition that causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social problems, or death to the person affected, or similar problems for those in contact with the person. In this broader sense, it sometimes includes injuries, disabilities, disorders, syndromes, infections, isolated symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function, while in other contexts and for other purposes these may be considered distinguishable categories.
Some symptoms of diseases can affect people not only physically but also mentally, as contracting and living with a disease can alter the affected person’s perspective on life.
Only some diseases such as influenza are contagious and commonly believed infectious. The microorganisms that cause these diseases are known as pathogens and include varieties of bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi.
In summary, some infectious diseases can be passed from person to person. Some are transmitted by insects or other animals. And people may get others by consuming contaminated food or water or being exposed to organisms in the environment.
