In today’s Christain Religious Studies class, We will be learning about Saul’s Disobedience and It’s Consequences. We hope you enjoy the class!
SAUL’S DISOBEDIENCE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES (1Sam. 15:20-25, 16:14-23, 31:1-13)
After Saul was chosen as the King of Israel, God gave him an assignment. God sent Samuel to tell Saul that He wanted to punish the Amalekites because they opposed the children of Israel when they were coming out of Egypt. Samuel told Saul that he should go to the Amalekites and smite them; he must destroy everything in their land, men, women, infants and animals.
According to the instruction, Saul defeated the Amalekites and everything they had but he spared Agag, their King and the best of sheep and other animals. God revealed his actions to Samuel who went to Saul and questioned him about the animals that he spared. Saul failed the leadership test of accepting responsibility. He blamed the people for sparing the animals Samuel rebuked Saul that the Lord had delight in obedience than sacrifice stating that, “behold to obey is better than sacrifice.” Samuel then gives the verdict, “because you have rejected the word of god he also has rejected you from being king.”
Consequences/results of Saul’s action
King Saul did not go scot-free the consequences of his disobedience are the following:
- God rejected him as the King of Israel. (1Sam.15:26)
- The Spirit of God left in and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him. (1Sam. 15:19-23)
- Saul and his children Jonathan Malchishua, Abinadab were all killed at Mount Gilboa in a battle between the Philistines and Israel. After his death the philistines cut-off his head and then fastened his dead body to the wall of Bethshan; they also took his armour and kept it in the temple of Ashtoreth their god.
Reaction to Saul’s death
when the men of Jabesh-Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to the body of Saul, the valiant ones among them went all night to remove the bodies of Saul and his children from the wall of Bethshan. They brought the bodies to Jabesh, burnt them and buried their bones there, after this, they fasted for 7 days.
Lessons we learnt from the life of Saul
- Obedience: Christians should be obedient to God instruction because the reward is far greater than the little gains of disobedience as we see in the life of King Saul.
- Greed: this was what led Saul to bring choice animals from the Amalekites. An action that displeased God. In all that you do, we should avoid greed.
- Favour may turn to sorrow: favour may eventually turn out to become sorrow if not properly managed. He returned to the favour that you receive from God we are expected to reference and respond in obedience to all of his instructions. Negligence to the instructions from God can turn favour to sorrow.
- We cannot hide from God: we must have this understanding that man cannot hide from God. the things that are supposedly done in the secret evidently revealed in the sight of God. God sees everything.
- God rewards obedience: God rewards; He does not leave a man without rewarding his efforts. God is always willing and ready to reward accordingly those who live obedience and righteous life.
