Moses as a leader: Exo. 1:8-22, 2:1-25, 3:1-22
The death of Joseph brought in another Pharaoh who did not know Joseph. the new feel threatened by the growing population of the Jews. So, he took measures to reduce their population. The steps he took were:
- the setting of task Masters over the Hebrews to give them excess work in the building of the new store cities namely, Pithom and Ramses
- Pharaoh instructed two Hebrew midwives to kill at birth all male children of the Hebrew women but they did not do this because the midwives feared God.
It was during the oppression of the Hebrews in Egypt that Moses was born. His mother hid him for three months before she finally put him in a basket and kept him at the bank of the river. One day the daughter of Pharaoh was going to bath in the rivers, she saw the baby and decided to save him. She named him Moses meaning “drawn out of water.”
Miriam, Moses’ sister who had been watching the baby quickly came to the daughter of Pharaoh and offered to bring a nurse for her. ironically, she called the mother of the baby who agreed to bring the baby up for a fixed wage. From this one can see the purpose of God for the life of Moses.
Moses: escape to the Land of Midian (Exo. 2:11-23)
Moses was raised as a royal person in the palace of Pharaoh but he hated how the Hebrews were maltreated by the Egyptians. One day he went out and saw an Egyptian beating up a Hebrew man, he looked around and saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. He did not know that the murderous act was known. The next day he saw two Israelites struggling with each other as he tried to make peace between them. One of them asked,
“who made you a prince and judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”
Moses realized from this statement that his murderous acts had been known. He was very afraid Pharaoh might kill him so he ran to the land of Midian.
In the land of Midian Moses lived in the house of Jethro the priest of the Land of Midian. Moses worked for him as a shepherd and he gave to Moses his daughter Zipporah as wife; they had a son named Gershom which means “I am a sojourner in the land.”
THE CALL AND COMMISSIONING OF MOSES (Exo. 3:1-4;31)
Moses continued life in the Midian as a shepherd working for Jethro his father-in-law one day as he was shepherding, he came to Horeb with the flock. There he had a strange experience. He saw the bush was burning but was not consumed as he moved towards this strange sight, he heard a voice from the bush, God called to him,
“Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, draw a not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”Exodus 3:4-5
God identified Himself as God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He also told Moses that he had seen the affliction of the Israelites in Egypt and had heard their cry.
God told Moses that he was sending him to tell Pharaoh he had come to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. Moses who fled Egypt at about the age of 40 was 80 years old when God sent him to Pharaoh.
Moses did not trust in his ability to do what God asked him to do he said who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt. God told him he will be with him and Moses asked God what to say to the Israelites if they asked for the person that sent him. God told Moses to tell them that “I am” had sent you. God also directed Moses to gather the elders of Israel and tell them the Lord the God of your father Abraham, Isaac and Jacob appeared to me and have seen your afflictions in Egypt and has promised to bring them out of Egypt. Moses should then go to Pharaoh with the elders of Israel and tell him that the God of Israelites has met with them. Therefore, he should let them go on a three-day journey in the wilderness so as to sacrifice to their God.
