KING REHOBOAM’S UNWISE DECISION (1Kgs 11:1-13, 1Kgs 12:1-2)
After the death of King Solomon. His son Rehoboam was made the King of Israel. When Jeroboam who was on exile in Egypt heard that Solomon was dead he came back to Israel. Jeroboam led the elders of Israel to Rehoboam making a request, “your father made our yoke heavy. Now, therefore, lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us and we will serve you.” (1Kgs 12:4).
Rehoboam’s response to them was that they should return after 3 days for the feedback to their request. Within these three days, he sought counsel from two groups of people. The first group consist of elders who were advisers during his father’s time and the second group, his colleagues who are his age group. His father’s counsellors advised him to listen to the people while his age group advised him to increase the people’s burden.
On the third day when Jéroboam came with the assembly to get feedback from the King. Unfortunately, Rehoboam spoke to them harshly following the counsel from his colleagues, the young men. when the people of Israel so that the king did not listen to their request they answered the king saying:
“What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.” 1 Kings 12:16
This unwise decision by Rehoboam made Israel rebel against the house of David. Further, this led to the formation of the northern kingdom which was referred to as Israel, Jeroboam was made the King of Israel while Rehoboam, the son of Solomon reigned in the southern kingdom that is, Judah. Although this was the fulfilment of a prophecy. However, we can learn Rehoboam committed a great diplomatic and political mistake by accepting the advice of young men who were his colleagues and refusing the advice of sages who lived with his father. Rehoboam may have been a victim of negative peer influence in that he followed the advice of his colleagues who he grew up with deference to the advice of the counsellors who were his father’s advisers.
