Every normal child grows and develops. The child passes through different stages of development. Though children however grow and develop at varying rates.  It is important to understand the pattern of growth and development of the average child.

Growth: this is an increase in the physical size, height and weight of the whole body or any of its part. It is measured in metres and kilogram.

Development: this is an increase in skills and the general functions of a child’s body. This occurs in a child when there are progressions what he/she does with his / her body e.g holding a toy, gaining understanding etc.

Factors that influence a child’s development

Heredity: This is the tendency of a child to inherit his or her parent’s characteristics eg colour of skin, eyeballs, nose, and body shape. Voice when speaking etc. The hereditary factor responsible for this is called a gene.

Environment: these include everything that is outside the child eg love and care from every member of the family, feeding with a balanced diet, provision of toys, housing and clothing.

Stages of development

  1. Pre-natal period: this is a period bwdo6the birth of a child
  2. Infancy
  3. Early and late childhood, puberty and adolescent

Baby growth process. From newborn to preschool child

One can predict development in children

It follows a definite pattern

A normal hold has an orderly and progressive development

Development starts from the head and spreads all over the body e.g the child gains control of the eyes then the head, arms and legs.
