INTRODUCTION: In the last lesson we learnt about some changes that take place around us- erosion (the washing away of the topsoil of the earth’s surface,). We learnt about the different types and causes of erosion. In today’s lesson, we will be learning about the effects of erosion on our environment and how it can be controlled.
Other causes of Erosion
Apart from the causes of erosion mentioned in the last lesson, below are other factors that may result in erosion.
Deforestation i.e cutting down trees.
Overgrazing of a place by animals.
Bush burning which exposes the soil to wind and water
Road construction
Mining of solid minerals and oil spillage.
Poor method of waste disposal.
Effects of Erosion
Erosion affects and impacts on our environment in many ways; which includes
It makes the soil to lose nutrient hence making it infertile.
The physical environment is degraded losing its beauty.
Erosion destroys the road making transportation difficult.
The bad road in turn affects vehicles, and people spend a lot of money to maintain the car.
The infertile soil results in poor harvest and low crop yield.
It can lead to loss of live and property.
Control of Erosion
Considering the heavy impact of erosion on our environment, it is important to control it. To control erosion, we can do the following:
Planting of trees(afforestation)
Bush burning should be banned.
Planting trees in rows to serve as break breaks to reduce the speed of wind
Education and enlightenment of the public to know the benefits of living in an erosion free environment.
Practicing strip cropping which is planting rows of farm crops like yam and maize in between grasses and legumes to protect the land.
