HEAT AND ENERGY(Conversion)
INTRODUCTION: In this topic, we are going to learn the concept of energy conversion and forms of energy.
WHAT IS ENERGY?
Energy can simply be defined as “the ability to do work”. Energy is how things change and move. Energy is everywhere around us and takes all sorts of forms. It takes energy to cook food, to drive a car and to jump in the air.
Heat and Energy Conversion
Heat and Energy Conversion can be defined as the process where there is a change in energy from one form to another such as the conversion of nuclear energy into heat energy, the conversion of light energy into heat, thermal energy into work etc.
Types of Energy Conversions
Energy conversion, is the transformation of energy from forms provided by nature to forms that can be used by humans, examples are
- kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy for pumping water and grinding grain.
- nuclear energy into heat energy
- conversion of light energy into heat,
- thermal energy into work etc.
WHAT IS HEAT CONVERSION?
Heat is energy. Heat is a measure of how much heat is required to raise the temperature of a unit quantity of some material by a given amount. For some materials, it takes a lot of added heat to raise their temperature.
DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY
Energy can take a number of different forms. Here are some of the forms energy takes:
- Chemical Energy – Chemical energy comes from atoms and molecules and how they interact. Chemical energy is the energy of chemical bonds and is also stored in atoms and ions. E.g lead element in batteries
- Electrical Energy – Electrical energy is generated by the movement of electrons. E.g batteries in torch lights.
- Gravitational Energy – Large objects such as the Earth and the Sun create gravity and gravitational energy. Example is a ball thrown up to space coming down.
- Heat Energy – Heat energy is also called thermal energy. It comes from molecules of different temperatures interacting. E.g the gas cooker heat for cooking.
- Light Energy – Light is called radiant energy. The Earth gets a lot of its energy from the light of the Sun.
- Motion Energy – Anything that is moving has energy. This is also called kinetic energy. E.g cars.
- Nuclear Energy- Huge amounts of nuclear energy can be generated by splitting or sharing atoms.
- Potential Energy – Potential energy is energy that is stored. One example of this is a spring that is pressed all the way down.
EVALUATION
Define heat and energy conversion
SUMMARY
Energy is basically what we need in doing our day to day activities, we have some forms of energy E.g Heat, nuclear, chemical, light, potential etc..
