INTRODUCTION: In the last three weeks we have learnt so much about pollution, the causes or sources, effects and prevention of land pollution, air pollution and water pollution. In today’s lesson we will be focusing on another aspect of pollution which is Noise Pollution. From within our homes to neighborhoods we are likely to be faced with all kinds of sounds which constitute noise.

 

Noise Pollution

Noise is an unwanted, unpleasant loud sound which is disruptive to the ear. Sound is what we hear, noise is an unwanted sound. Noise is loud, confused, or senseless shouting or outcry.

Noise pollution is unwanted or excessive sound that can have dangerous effects on human health and environmental quality. Noise pollution is commonly generated inside many industrial buildings and some other workplaces, but it also comes from highway, railway, and airplane traffic and from outdoor construction activities.

 

Causes/Sources of Noise Pollution

  • Blaring of car horns
  • Noise from rowdy gatherings in school
  • Loud sounds from loudspeakers
  • Noise from heavy machines, tractors and industrial appliances
  • Noise from generating sets
  • Loud music played in parties and other places of entertainment shows

Effects of Noise Pollution

  • it can cause physical damage to the eardrum.
  • It results in temporary or permanent hearing loss.
  • Excessive noise exposure can also raise blood pressure and pulse rates
  • It causes irritability, anxiety, and mental fatigue.
  • It interferes with sleep, recreation, and personal communication

 

Prevention of Noise Pollution.

  • Noise pollution control should be established in the workplace and in the community.
  • Laws can be enacted banning the use of loudspeakers in open places etc.
  • The general public should be enlightened on the dangers of loud
  • Blaring of car horns should be discouraged.
